FIFA Federation Internationale de Football Association (or International Federation of Association Football)

There are 8 Groups, A to H. Each Group has 4 teams with each team playing each other once, i.e each team plays 3 matches, with a total of 6 matches in one Group. With 8 Groups, there are 6 x 8, i.e. 48 matches in the Group stage.

Top two teams from each Group qualify for the next stage, which is knockout stage. Since there are 8 Groups, 16 teams qualify for the knockout stage (2 top teams from each group). There are 8 matches for the 16 teams (winner from Group A vs runner-up from Group B and so on). That makes 56 matches, 48 in group stage and 8 matches in knockout stage. After knockout stage, 8 teams continue to the next stage or the quarter finals for the 4 quarter final matches. This makes 56 plus 4, 60 matches. Followed by 2 semi-final matches, makes 62 matches. Group H matches
Colombia top this Group with 6 points and both Japan and Senegal were tied at 4 points, and also tied the goal difference and goals scored (goal difference comes before goals scored). The head to head match between Japan and Senegal was also tied 2-2. Finally the the tie was broken with the number of yellow and red cards given to a team. Here Japan received 4 fewer yellow cards than Senegal. Interestingly both Japan and Senegal had their last group match with Poland and Colombia respectively on the last day of the group matches which both lost and only after both matches ended, it was determined which team broke the tie. In this case based on number of yellow cards received.
